Seed Doesn't Cost
.It Pays
Plant Seed not Grain
A collaborative
study between Texas A&M University and AgriPro
Wheat planted in the fall of 2000 already is yielding valuable
data to prove that certified seed increases producer profitability.
Seedling emergence counts of 5 varieties comparing certified versus
"saved" seed of each variety showed a decline in emergence
of 36% when saved seed was planted under dryland conditions, and
an emergence decline of 22% under irrigated conditions.
These are
differences that translate into dollars for producers. In order
to attain equivalent stands, producers would have to plant a quarter
to a third more seed per acre if they were using saved seed. Reduced
stands equal reduced yields. Reduced stands equate to lower stocking
rates and lower gains per acre when wheat is grazed. Reduced stands
mean reduced profits.
Certified
seed carries with it many other hidden advantages such as:
- Decreased
risk since farmers or elevators do not need to monitor heat
or insect activity in storage bins
- Decreased
risk since farmers can forward market their entire crop without
saving back enough grain to replant
- Decreased
risk since farmers rely on a seed producer for high quality
seed rather than planting what the combine produced.
Certified
seed is your assurance of varietal purity, germination percentage
and low foreign matter content.
Certified
seed doesn't cost extra, it pays more.
