TAMSPAN
90 - was developed and released by the Texas Agricultural Experiment
Station and the USDA in 1990. It was derived by mass selection from
a population of the cross Toalson X UF73422 made in 1975. Tamspan
90 is a Spanish type peanut with good resistance to pod rot and
Sclerotinia blight. It is very similar in growth and appearance
to the variety Starr and is higher yielding, especially when Sclerotinia
blight is present.
TAMRUN
96 - was developed and released by the Texas Agricultural Experiment
Station. It yielded 14.3% better than Florunner in 33 irrigated
tests in Texas from 1990-1995. It yielded 17% better than Florunner
in nine regional tests in the Southwest and Southeast U.S. The shelling
percentage and grade tends to be slightly lower for Tamrun 96 compared
to Florunner. However, the average difference in grade is less than
1%, which is more than offset by the increased yield. The seed size
of Tamrun 96 is slightly larger than Florunner. Compared to Florunner,
Tamrun 96 appears to exhibit better performance under pressure from
several diseases including tomato spotted wilt, southern blight,
sclerotinia, and pod rot. Chemical properties of Tamrun 96 are similar
to Florunner. This variety is protected under PVP title V.
FLORUNNER
- is a runner-type peanut released by the Florida Agricultural
Experiment Station and is adapted primarily to the long growing
season conditions such as those in Florida and Georgia. Its
plant growth is more prostrate, foliage less dense, and its
seed matures more uniformly than Early Runner. Pods are concentrated
near the central branches or tap root. Seedling vigor and
leafspot disease ratings of Florunner are similar to those
of Early Runner. The incidence of pod rot has been slightly
less for Florunner. Florunner has a high percentage of sound
mature kernels, desirable oil quality characteristics, and
good processing characteristics.
NemaTAM
- is a runner peanut that has excellent resistance to the
root-knot nematode species Meloidogyne arenaria and Meloidogyne
javanica. The line was derived from a backcrossing program
using Florunner as the recurrent parent, so the line is essentially
Florunner with the nematode resistance gene(s) incorporated.
The plants
look very much like Florunner and have much the same phenotypic
characters. Leaflet size and color, mainstem height, lateral
branch length, pod shape and size, and seed shape and size
are almost identical to Florunner. The pods of NemaTAM are
mostly two seeded, but occasional three seeded pods occur.
NemaTAM has the typical Florunner growth habit and life span.
It has mostly alternate branching pattern, but with some sequential.
It has an occasional flower on the mainstem, and plant color
is the same as Florunner. The chemical analyses of NemaTAM
are essentially the same as Florunner, and yields and grades
are equal to Florunner except under root-knot nematode pressure,
in which case yields of NemaTAM will be much higher than Florunner,
depending upon the level on nematode infestation.
NemaTAM
was officially released in March of 2002 and application for
Plant Variety Protection with Title V has been filed. This
seed may be sold in certified classes only. Seed is available
for 2002 from the Texas Foundation Seed Service through a
non-exclusive licensing agreement.
Tamrun
OL 01 - The new peanut line named Tamrun OL 01 is a runner
type peanut with large vines and a dark green color. The plants
are not as large as Tamrun 96, but are larger than Florunner.
In a thick planting (more than 2 seed per foot of row) the
main stem is not highly prominent, but is visible. The plant
color is a slightly darker green than Florunner, but is only
discernable when the varieties are growing side by side. There
is less than ¼ of 1% variegated plants and less than
½ of 1% has an erect appearance in a thick planting.
The pods and seed are much larger than Florunner and a little
larger than Tamrun 96. The seed weigh approximately 70g per
100 seed. The data on oil analyses indicates that the line
has a high O/L ratio. Average O/L to date and run about 27:1.
Maturity range is approximately equal to Florunner. Occasional
seed which have a split seed coat are present, <1%. Disease
resistances have been near equal to Tamrun 96.
Tamrun
OL 01 was released in March of 2002. Application for Plant
Variety Protection with the Title V option has been filed
and requires that the seed be sold in certified classes only.
Seed will be available through the Texas Foundation Seed Service
through a non-exclusive royalty bearing licensing agreement.
Licensees will also be required to have on file a licensing
agreement with the University of Florida Research Foundation,
the holder of multiple patents for the High O/L gene contained
in Tamrun OL 01.
OLin
- OLin is named for the late TAES Peanut Breeder Olin Smith.
Dr. Smith was very instrumental in the development of many
new peanut varieties adapted to the Southwest U.S. OLin is
a Spanish peanut that has an elevated O/L FFA (free fatty
acid) content. OLin has an erect growth habit with sequential
branching and flowers on the mainstem. Mature plants will
have main secondary lateral branches (9+), originating at
the basal nodes. The leaf size and plant color are similar
to Tamspan 90, but slightly smaller in overall height. This
is difficult to determine without side-by-side comparisons.
Pod and seed size are slightly smaller than Tamspan 90, and
occasional three seeded pods occur. The yield of OLin will
be slightly less than Tamspan 90, but grades (TSMK) will be
slightly higher.
OLin was released
in March of 2002. Application for Plant Variety Protection with
the Title V option has been filed and requires that the seed be
sold in certified classes only. Seed will be available from the
Texas Foundation Seed Service through a non-exclusive royalty bearing
licensing agreement. Licensees will also be required to have on
file a licensing agreement with the University of Florida Research
Foundation, the holder of multiple patents for the High O/L gene
contained in OLin.
Tamrun
OL02 is a high O/L runner peanut that has excellent yield
and grade potential and some of the disease tolerance that is found
in Tamrun 96. Tamrun OL02 is a sister line to Tamrun OL01 (Tx977006)
but it has a smaller seed that is more typical of currently grown
runner cultivars such as Tamrun 96. Tamrun OL02 also has lower sugar
content than Tamrun OL01. The objective in releasing Tamrun OL02
is to provide the peanut growers of Texas, and especially West Texas,
a runner variety which has high O/L and some ability to withstand
effects of soil borne diseases and tomato spotted wilt virus, but
with a smaller seed size and lower sugar content than Tamrun OL01.
It has been
determined that a high oleic acid to linoleic acid ratio (O/L) in
peanut (and other crops) imparts desirable traits into the peanut
(and other crops) after it is roasted. Desirable attributes include
longer shelf live of products, including peanut butter, peanut candies,
and roasted peanuts in and out of the shell. Also, there are definite
health benefits from eating such products, i.e., more mono- and
poly-unsaturated fat in the diet.
Limited quantities
of Foundation Seed were available for spring planting 2003, and
Certified Seed should be commercially available for spring planting
in 2004. Application for Plant Variety Protection with the Title
V option has been filed and requires that the seed be sold in certified
classes only. Seed will be available through the Texas Foundation
Seed Service through a non-exclusive royalty bearing licensing agreement.
Licensees will also be required to have on file a licensing agreement
with the University of Florida Research Foundation, the holder of
multiple patents for the High O/L gene contained in Tamrun OL02.
